Unconfessed sin is just like the dirt, the mess, the creepy crawlies and the domestic conflict in the dirty and warring home mentioned earlier. Jesus will not be “at home” in our hearts. When we have unconfessed sins, we keep parts of our lives closed to the presence of Jesus.
In John 13:9-10, Peter now wanted Jesus to wash him all over, but that was not necessary. Jesus said that it was only his feet that needed to be washed. When we first obeyed Christ's call to follow as a disciple, all our past sins were dealt with by the cross. Our whole life was cleansed and forgiven then – that was the washing all over. So there is no need for that kind of cleansing to be repeated now. But as we walk along the road of discipleship, our feet will get dirty because sin will still mark our life. As such, we must allow Him to wash our feet, to keep ourselves clean. And in 1 John 1:9, it says that we have confess our sins to Him. This is the kind of cleansing which we need and if we obey it, it will lead us to increasing freedom and deepening commitment.
Let us pray the prayer of Psalm 139:23-24 together. After that, we invite ??? to close in prayer for us and to seek afresh the Lord's forgiveness and cleansing. May the Lord grant us the strength and courage to make our decision before Him to deal with anything which needs to be put right.
