John 9:39 Jesus said, "For judgement I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind."
Before Jesus came into this world, people are living according to their own measuring stick. The law, customs and cultural practices became the guidelines that they lived by. However, a lot of these so-called rules are either man-inspired or have been customized such that they could suit the wants of man. In other words, they are living in spiritual blindness.
When Jesus came into this world, He brought with Him a whole new set of guidelines. The benchmark has changed. His teachings may have been in contradiction with the practices and belief of that era (e.g. healing on Sabbath day, compassion and forgiveness to all), but as John 9:39 says, He came to this world to grant understanding to those who have strayed.
John 9:41 Jesus said, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
We would like to say that we understand and we know the truth. The Bible has provided us with all the guidelines and advice that we need. We may be tempted to think that since we are Christians, who knows better than us? But we must be careful to claim what we know so that we do not cross the line which separates true knowledge from arrogance. True knowledge will keep us rooted in doing God's will. Arrogance will make us believe that we are doing God's will but in actual fact, we are not as near as we think we are.
